Weekly | South Korea's LED civilian market is poised to be sent overseas manufacturers "just want to move"

Standardizing the LED display manufacturing industry would allow businesses to make optimal use of resources. Products could then be mass-produced under a standardized framework, reducing operational costs and enhancing corporate competitiveness. This would ensure that the value of LED displays is better integrated into the end-user experience.

Since the start of the year, the Korean Land and Real Estate Company (LH) has been considering installing LED lighting in all its apartments. Major construction firms are also expanding their use of LED lighting. The LED lighting sector is seeing an increase in the supply of LED products to private homes.

Industry insiders report that the South Korean government plans to introduce LED standardization regulations soon to set benchmarks for LED lighting fixtures used by large construction companies like LH.

A representative from the national LED industry stated, “As an essential component, LED lighting in apartments managed by LH has sparked interest among private construction companies and residents alike.”

Considered an eco-friendly energy source, LED lighting is expected to boost power efficiency in the lighting sector, potentially saving up to 20% of domestic electricity usage. This translates to energy savings equivalent to four nuclear power plants for about 10 million households. Free of mercury and UV emissions, LED lighting is seen as both safe and harmless. Compared to incandescent and fluorescent lamps, it consumes 80% and 50% less energy, respectively.

With growing demand for lighting solutions in Korea, LEDVANCE, which split from OSRAM last year, launched new indoor LED lights earlier this year.

An executive at LEDVANCE noted, “We’re broadening our product range in preparation for the expanding private home LED lighting market.”

Shanghai Sansi LED Bulbs Face Labeling Issues

In the first quarter of 2017, during sampling inspections by the Shanghai Quality Supervision Bureau, Shanghai Sansi LED bulbs were found lacking the mandatory Hertz (Hz) marking. While this isn’t a quality issue, the oversight was addressed promptly. All other indicators for the sampled bulbs were deemed合格, assuring consumers of their safety and performance.

Nanjing Consumers Association Finds All Sampled LED Bulbs Unqualified

LED bulbs have long been praised for their energy efficiency and light output compared to traditional incandescent and CFLs. Yet, recent tests conducted by the Nanjing Consumers Association revealed that out of 42 samples across 37 brands, all failed to meet relevant national standards. The failure rate stood at 100%.

The study, which evaluated product labeling, power, luminous efficacy, and color rendering index, showed that while 95.2% of bulbs met the luminous efficacy criteria, only 35.7% passed the color rendering index test. Power indicators were met by 54.8% of the tested products.

Xu Ming, Vice President and Secretary General of the Nanjing Consumers Association, pointed out that product labeling was the primary concern. Many labels lacked complete information, and even when present, discrepancies were noted between stated and measured values, raising questions about compliance.

Hongli Optoelectronics Introduces Anti-Vulcanization LED Series

Hongli Zhihui recently launched its anti-vulcanization “screen seal” series of LED products. Utilizing advanced PPL technology, these innovations tackle the issue of blackening caused by vulcanization, oxidation, and bromination. This breakthrough offers superior reliability and longevity.

According to Hongli Zhihui officials, the anti-vulcanization technique employs a unique PPL process to coat the silver plating layer with an inorganic substance. This layer prevents sulfur, oxygen, and bromine reactions with the silver plating, offering long-term stability against corrosion and high temperatures. This advancement marks a significant milestone in LED reliability and has already led to three patent applications.
