On September 26, the Weibo Television Impact Summit took place in Shanghai, bringing together key players from the entertainment industry to discuss the future of television and online content. Sun Zhonghuai, Vice President and CEO of Penguin Television under Tencent, attended the event and participated in the "Combination and Cooperation" theme forum. Alongside him were industry leaders such as Li Yong from Dragon TV Center, Wang Jun from Zhejiang TV, and Wang Gaofei, CEO of Weibo, all of whom shared their insights on the evolving media landscape.
The forum focused on the increasing integration between online platforms and traditional TV stations, emphasizing how this collaboration enhances the value of content. According to Sun Zhonghuai, the quality standards for online and TV dramas are becoming more aligned, reflecting a shift toward higher production values. He pointed out that when a show is only released on one platform, it fails to reach its full potential. However, by combining forces—whether through cross-platform distribution or joint productions—the value of the content can be maximized.
Over the past few years, online dramas have significantly improved in quality, moving away from their early days of being seen as low-budget or unrefined. This evolution has attracted top talent from the traditional TV and film industries, including renowned directors like Hou Hongliang, Kong Hao, Guan Hu, and Zhang Li, who have now joined Tencent's network drama projects. Their involvement signals a growing recognition of the online space as a serious and profitable arena for content creation.
Sun also highlighted the booming film and television market, noting that both capital and user bases are supporting a sustainable commercial model. Video platforms, whether through advertising or subscription-based models, are expanding rapidly, drawing in more professionals and teams to invest in this sector.
In the mobile internet era, video platforms are facing an overwhelming amount of content, leading to a "mass" trend. To cater to diverse audiences, online dramas are now more varied in style and genre. Tencent has been focusing on both high-quality original content and niche productions tailored to specific audience segments. One example is *Athlete 2*, a co-production between Penguin Film and TVB, which marked a new direction in storytelling and production. The show achieved over 500 million views within a week of its release and received strong audience feedback.
Speaking about *Athlete 2*, Sun described it as a prime example of segmented content, where collaboration between different studios led to mutual benefits and creative innovation. He believes that with the ongoing trend of convergence, the future of online dramas will see even greater investment and higher quality.
During the Weibo TV Impact Event, Tencent’s self-produced drama *Ghost Blowing the Lights* won the "Outstanding Net Drama Award of the Year," while the new variety show *Children of Tomorrow* was honored with the "Annual Excellent Award for Online Variety." These awards reflect the growing influence and recognition of online content in the broader entertainment ecosystem.
