"Did you ever feel overwhelmed taking your little one to the airport for the first time? Juggling check-in procedures under pressure while trying to soothe a crying baby surrounded by unfamiliar surroundings—it’s enough to make anyone stressed. It's heartening to know that some airports are stepping up to offer more considerate experiences for travelers.
In the UK, two airports have already embraced augmented reality (AR) technology. London Gatwick has implemented AR to help passengers navigate, while London City Airport uses it to assist air traffic controllers in monitoring routes safely. Now, the trend continues as the UK’s biggest airport joins the movement—but this time, with a focus on kids.
Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest hubs globally, isn’t always the most child-friendly place, especially for young ones who might feel out of their depth amid the hustle and bustle. Whether it’s the noise, crowds, or long waits, these moments can easily become overwhelming for children.
Working alongside Ads Reality, a creative tech company, Heathrow has developed an AR app specifically designed to engage and entertain kids during check-ins and layovers. Beyond just keeping children entertained, this technology could also help Heathrow track footfall patterns across the terminal via strategically placed markers.
This AR experience is titled ‘Travel Around the World with Adventures.’ By using their smartphones, users can scan hidden digital badges scattered throughout the airport. Each badge reveals an animated character from the beloved ‘Mr Men and Little Miss’ series, adding a touch of magic to the journey.
Richard Corps, the marketing director and co-founder of Ads Reality, expressed his excitement about this collaboration: “We’re thrilled to bring this interactive experience to Heathrow Airport. As a major hub, Heathrow is setting a benchmark for how innovation can elevate the passenger experience.â€
Moreover, Heathrow can leverage this technology to gather valuable insights into passenger density across various areas of the airport. Terminal feedback at different points will help the airport understand where bottlenecks occur and how they can optimize layouts for a smoother flow of travelers.

While airports worldwide are gradually integrating such innovations, it’s comforting to see efforts being made to ensure families enjoy a more enjoyable travel experience. After all, every parent deserves a break—and maybe even a bit of fun—when navigating the chaos of modern air travel."
