On the morning of August 22, Beijing time, Disney collaborated with researchers from the University of Massachusetts Boston to unveil a groundbreaking technology that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to gauge the popularity of short stories. While these AI programs aren’t sophisticated enough to critique story quality like professional literary experts, they can effectively predict which narratives might resonate most with audiences. “Our neural network has shown promising results in forecasting a story’s potential popularity,†explained Disney researcher Boyang Li. “It won’t replace judges at local writing contests, but it can definitely help direct future studies.â€
A visual representation of this advancement can be seen in the accompanying image titled "Disney Uses Artificial Intelligence Algorithms to Assess Short Story Popularity," sourced from the blog page [insert link]. The image displays a vivid illustration of how AI might play a role in evaluating storytelling.
The research team utilized the social platform Quora to train their AI models, as the site hosts numerous responses formatted as personal narratives. Readers' upvotes and positive feedback on these posts served as a proxy for gauging a story's appeal, providing valuable data for the study.
For this project, the researchers gathered approximately 55,000 responses, out of which over 28,000 were analyzed. These responses averaged around 369 words per post. Two distinct neural networks were subsequently developed: one focused on analyzing individual components of each story, while the other took a broader, more holistic view of the narrative.
Each AI model demonstrated the ability to predict the relative popularity of a story. Compared to basic text evaluations, both neural networks proved more accurate. However, the global neural network stood out, boasting an impressive performance that was 18 times better than the part-focused neural network.
Industry insiders speculate that film studios could adopt similar technologies in the future to assist in script selection. This development not only highlights the growing intersection between entertainment and artificial intelligence but also opens new possibilities for content creators and producers alike.
