On August 1, Power Integrations and Casambi Technologies OY jointly unveiled a new reference design (DER-612) in San Jose, California. This innovative design introduces a power factor-corrected, constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) 12W isolated flyback power supply specifically tailored for smart lighting applications. Within this design, a 3.3V power supply drives the Casambi CBM-001 Bluetooth® wireless module, enabling smooth dimming and color management for four-string LED loads ranging from 0mA to 400mA. The power supply boasts a wide input voltage range, spanning from 90VAC to 265VAC, maintaining a power factor of 0.8 or higher across all input voltages.

The design leverages Power Integrations' InnoSwitch-CH power controller, which consolidates the primary, secondary, and feedback circuits into a single surface-mount off-line flyback switch IC. This IC incorporates not only the primary-side power FET, the primary-side controller, and the secondary-side synchronous rectification controller but also Power Integrations’ FluxLink magnetic induction coupling technology. FluxLink facilitates safe connections across the isolation boundary without requiring an optocoupler. Secondary-side control ensures precise constant voltage regulation and rapid step load response, while simplified PWM control eliminates the need for a secondary DC/DC converter. The IC’s high efficiency and low standby power consumption negate the necessity for extra heat sinks, enabling designs compliant with DOE-6 energy efficiency standards. Additionally, a built-in secondary-side auxiliary power supply output supports RF and MCU control circuitry.
The CBM-001 is a Class 2 embedded Bluetooth 4.0 module engineered for LED lighting control, luminaires, and LED bulbs. Featuring Casambi proprietary firmware, it is fully compatible with other Casambi devices. Through the Bluetooth 4.0 protocol, the CBM-001 can be wirelessly managed via the Casambi app on smartphones and tablets. These devices naturally form a self-healing and self-organizing wireless mesh network, allowing control of numerous lights from any location without the need for additional gateway modules.
Hubie Notohamiprodjo, Director of Marketing for LED Lighting Products at Power Integrations, remarked, “Smart lighting systems can monitor and control intricate home and workplace lighting. However, the standby power consumed by the control subsystem often diminishes the energy savings provided by high-efficiency LEDs. The combination of low quiescent current consumption and InnoSwitch-CH’s exceptionally low standby power optimizes the overall system standby performance while guaranteeing instant illumination output.â€
