Alibaba acquires Israeli company Visualead for $50 million to strengthen VR/AR technology

According to recent reports from international media, Alibaba has made a significant move by acquiring Israeli startup Visualead, with the deal valued between $30 million and $50 million. This acquisition is expected to lay the foundation for the establishment of an Israeli development center under Alibaba's umbrella, further expanding its global tech footprint.

Visualead, also known as Visual Code, is an innovative Israeli company specializing in O2O (Online to Offline) solutions and QR code technology. It has been a leader in visual QR code innovation, offering unique ways to integrate codes into images, animations, and videos. The partnership between Alibaba and Visualead is strategic, with Alibaba planning to leverage the company’s patents and technologies to enhance its own AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) capabilities.

This marks Alibaba’s first investment in an Israeli startup, highlighting the growing interest in the country’s tech ecosystem. The two companies have had a collaborative relationship since 2013, when Visualead became the first Israeli firm to partner with Alibaba. In 2015, Alibaba invested approximately $7 million in the company, signaling its confidence in Visualead’s potential.

With around 20 employees currently based in Herzliya, Visualead is set to grow significantly once it becomes an official Alibaba development center. The company plans to hire an additional 40 employees, reflecting its expansion ambitions. This acquisition not only strengthens Alibaba’s presence in Israel but also underscores its commitment to advancing visual technology and enhancing user experiences through innovative digital tools.
