Texas Instruments high-voltage switch to help power-on smart meter and home automation to achieve energy-saving design

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a groundbreaking 700V switch that offers industry-leading performance with less than 100µA of quiescent current. This innovative solution uses half the power of existing technologies, reinforcing TI’s commitment to high-voltage power solutions for off-line AC/DC designs. The UCC28880 controller is highly integrated, combining 700V MOSFETs and high-voltage current supplies to enhance energy efficiency in normally-on, non-isolated power systems with up to 100mA output current. It's ideal for applications such as smart meters, home automation devices, and large appliances. Dave Freeman, CTO of TI’s High Voltage Power Solutions Products Division, emphasized the importance of minimizing power consumption in smart meters: "With hundreds of millions of smart meters worldwide, they continuously consume grid power to measure and report energy usage. While this consumption is not directly billed to users, it adds up over time. TI’s latest high-voltage power solutions will help reduce this energy demand, making smart meters more efficient and sustainable." The UCC28880 high-voltage transfer switch not only cuts system costs but also reduces overall power supply size while maintaining high efficiency and performance. Designers can use it to build various converter topologies—such as buck, buck-boost, and reverse—without needing extra semiconductor components. ![UCC28880 Image](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/20/17/11/24161244925654.jpg) Key features of the UCC28880 include: - **Industry-lowest power consumption**: Quiescent current drops below 100µA, reducing load requirements. - **Compact design and cost-effective**: Integrated with a 700V MOSFET, startup current supply, and internal current sensing in a 29.4mm² 7-pin SO package. No external compensation needed, further reducing component count and board space. - **Excellent performance under heavy load**: Includes inductor current runaway protection to prevent damage during short-circuit conditions. - **Overheat protection**: Ensures safe operation with hysteresis-based restart. - **Improved insulation distances**: High-voltage pins are isolated on one side of the package, maximizing gaps between high and low voltage pins. The UCC28880-based off-line AC/DC reference design (PMP8550) enables designers to create compact solutions up to 38mm x 32mm x 22mm. It supports low-cost, low-power, non-isolated, high-side buck conversion and generates up to 100mA output current at 13V. This design is ideal for a wide range of industrial applications. Schematics, CAD files, and test results are available for download. The UCC28880 is now available in a 7-lead SOIC package. Evaluation boards for both low-side and high-side buck configurations come with downloadable PSpice models.
