Volkswagen will launch a bargain version of electric SUV in 2020: the voice of the people

The era of expensive electric vehicles is rapidly fading, as major automakers like GM and Tesla have introduced models priced below $40,000. This trend signals a shift toward more accessible electric cars in the near future. Even Volkswagen, one of Germany’s leading automakers, is stepping up its game with plans for an affordable electric SUV. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the ID Crozz EV concept, a model that could serve as the blueprint for a U.S.-market electric SUV launching in 2020. The ID Crozz features two electric motors, delivering a total of 302 horsepower. It also comes equipped with an 83-kWh battery that supports fast charging—reaching 80% charge in just 30 minutes—and offers an impressive range of around 300 miles (about 483 kilometers). Although the final production version may differ slightly in design from the current concept, Volkswagen has confirmed that key performance and battery specs will remain unchanged. However, the company hasn’t yet revealed the exact price of the ID Crozz, only stating that it's positioned for "mass adoption." While the cost remains a mystery, the car’s performance and range suggest it could be a strong contender in the growing EV market. In addition to the ID Crozz, Volkswagen also showcased the ID Buzz, a retro-inspired electric minivan, and a basic version of the ID concept car, which targets the compact EV segment. These new models are part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy to launch 15 new electric vehicles by 2025, supported by a dedicated electric vehicle platform. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Volkswagen is making clear its commitment to electric mobility. With these upcoming models, the brand is positioning itself as a serious player in the global EV race. Whether the ID Crozz will live up to its promise remains to be seen, but the direction is clear: electric vehicles are becoming more affordable, more powerful, and more mainstream than ever before.
