Buy it all over the world! Chinese companies have purchased so many international brands

In early November, Hisense made a significant move by acquiring Toshiba’s global TV business for 12.9 billion yen, marking a major step in the decline of Toshiba and sparking domestic reactions. This acquisition showed how Chinese companies are increasingly taking over former industry leaders and competitors. In fact, since the rise of international acquisitions, the number of well-known international brands that have been bought by Chinese firms in the 3C sector is far more than most people might imagine. These deals often reflect not only financial strength but also strategic moves to gain market share and brand recognition globally. One of the most notable acquisitions was Lenovo's purchase of IBM's PC business in 2004. On December 8, 2004, Lenovo announced it would acquire IBM’s global PC business for $1.25 billion. This included the ThinkPad and ThinkCenter product lines, which were then developed under the IBM brand for five years. Interestingly, even in Japan, at Yamato Laboratories in Kanagawa Prefecture, Lenovo continued to support and develop ThinkPad models. Despite mixed opinions about the quality of ThinkPads post-acquisition, Lenovo has always viewed ThinkPad as its core brand. For example, when a security vulnerability was discovered in Intel’s Management Engine, ThinkPad was among the first to receive a patched system. On July 4, 2011, Lenovo completed the acquisition of NEC’s notebook computer business. The new joint venture saw Lenovo and NEC holding 51% and 49% respectively. This helped boost Lenovo’s market share in Japan’s notebook market to 26%. In November 2023, Lenovo took another step in Japan by purchasing a 51% stake in Fujitsu Client Computing Equipment Co., Ltd. (FCCL) for 22.5 billion yen. This increased Lenovo’s market share in Japan’s notebook market to 40%, showing their growing presence in the region. In January 2014, Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobile from Google for $2.9 billion, a much lower price than the $12.9 billion Google had paid in 2011. However, this deal came with limitations—Google retained most of Motorola’s patents, and Lenovo could only license them through cooperation with Google. The brand itself was the main asset purchased. Not all acquisitions were successful. While Lenovo's acquisition of ThinkPad was a major success, other attempts by Chinese companies didn't go as smoothly. For instance, TCL spent 8.2 million euros to acquire Schneider Electric in 2002, and later bought Thomson TV in France in 2004, forming a joint venture called TTE to enter the European TV market. Unfortunately, the results weren’t favorable. In 2007, TTE Europe filed for bankruptcy. By 2011, the French court ordered TCL and its subsidiaries to pay 23.1 million euros to the liquidators of TTE Europe. TCL also ventured into mobile phones by partnering with Alcatel. In April 2004, they formed a joint venture with an investment of 100 million euros. However, after acquiring 45% of Alcatel’s shares, Alcatel reclaimed its mobile phone patents for 20 million euros. At CES 2015, TCL announced the acquisition of Palm, though the company clarified that only the brand was purchased, not the entire company. Later, in December 2016, Blackberry signed a licensing agreement with TCL, allowing the latter to manufacture and sell BlackBerry-branded devices worldwide. This allowed TCL to own four mobile phone brands: TCL, Alcatel, Palm, and BlackBerry. These acquisitions highlight the evolving landscape of global tech companies and the increasing influence of Chinese firms on the world stage.
