VR Network has learned that Google has showcased three digital projects within the Forbidden City Digital Museum. Currently, Google's initiative, known as Google Arts & Culture, has partnered with 28 Chinese museums and cultural institutions, displaying over 13,000 exhibits. Recently, the platform collaborated with the Beijing Forbidden City to set up a flash lab in the digital library next to Yangxin Temple, featuring three digital art projects.
The exhibition space is approximately 70 square meters, with three interactive booths arranged in a semi-circle. In the center of the room, more than 30 stools are available for visitors to sit and explore the experience. As you enter from the right side, the first booth is the Google Portrait Matcher. This interactive display uses two screens: one linked to a camera that captures your face, while the other shows a rotating collection of portraits from around the world. When participants stand in front of the camera, their image appears on the left screen, and the right screen scrolls through various portraits until it finds one that closely resembles their face. As you turn your head, the matching portrait changes accordingly, offering a fun and engaging way to connect with art.
Moving counterclockwise, the second exhibit features a large 6-square-meter screen showcasing high-resolution artworks from global museums. These include the Acropolis Museum’s "Poseidon," the Apollo god of the sun, the relief of Aphrodite, Botticelli’s "The Birth of Venus," and Van Gogh’s "Starry Night" from the MoMA. All these works were captured using Google’s Gigapixel camera, which offers over 100,000 pixels per image. For example, Zhao Chang’s "Zhao Dynasty" painting, housed at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, reveals intricate details such as the flowers on the petals when viewed online through the Google Arts & Culture platform.
The final exhibit is Google Expeditions, an augmented reality (AR) learning application that requires Google Cardboard VR glasses. Teachers can use a tablet to select images or videos, and students wearing the VR glasses can immerse themselves in 360-degree experiences. According to Google staff, up to 40 VR glasses can be connected to a single iPad, making the technology accessible both in educational settings and for personal use. However, access to Expeditions currently requires a scientific internet connection.
Google Arts & Culture was launched in 2011, offering users access to over 400,000 digital artworks from more than 1,400 museums worldwide through its website and mobile apps. In China, the project has partnered with 28 museums and cultural institutions, showcasing more than 13,000 exhibits. In 2016, Google collaborated with the Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum and the Chinese Association for the Development of Non-Survived Industries to host a “Chinese Handicraft Art Exhibition.†Over 1,800 artworks were featured across 38 online exhibitions, including Hmong batik textiles, Wuzhou puppet sculptures, and other traditional crafts.
In this temporary exhibition, 105 items were displayed, including artifacts from the Forbidden City, Tongyan Ladies Yushan, Ren Xiongwan’s Atlas, and the Emei Chicken Peony Bowl. According to VR Network, the exhibition will run until December 8. This immersive experience highlights how technology is transforming the way people engage with art and cultural heritage.
