Renesas Electronics Introduces Automotive Radar Solutions Supporting ADAS and Self-Driven Vehicles

Tokyo, Japan, January 4, 2017 - Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), the world's leading semiconductor solutions provider, today announced the launch of its first RH850-based 32-bit automotive radar microcontroller (MCU) series RH850 /V1R, this series delivers the high performance and features required for future advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. The RH850/V1R-M, the first product in the RH850/V1R series, includes a digital signal processor (DSP, Note 1) and a high-speed serial interface designed for medium to long range radar.

Renesas will also provide tools such as software and evaluation boards to enable system developers to start developing with the RH850/V1R-M solution.

With the development of ADAS and autonomous driving technology, sensors are rapidly becoming a key technology. Currently, cars are equipped with various sensors such as cameras, lidars and ultrasonic sensors. For ADAS applications such as advanced emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, radar sensors are especially needed because, unlike other sensors, radar sensors are not limited by external environments (unfavorable weather conditions such as rain, fog, or the presence of the sun). The adverse effects.

In addition, high-precision sensing technology is essential to enable future autonomous driving to meet the requirements for distance resolution, object separation, and speed measurement accuracy. This requires an increase in the number of antennas and improved signal processing performance.

To meet these needs, Renesas Electronics has introduced a new RH850/V1R-M MCU designed for ADAS radar applications. The new MCUs feature optimized programmable digital signal processing, 320 megahertz (MHz) dual core and industry-leading 2 megabytes (MB) of high-speed flash, 2 MB of internal RAM while meeting the industry's highest temperature requirements.

The main features of the RH850/V1R-M MCU:

(1) Improves radar signal processing performance and increases sensing accuracy with flexible, programmable, high-performance DSP

The RH850/V1R-M MCU is designed to optimize hardware acceleration in the DSP. Optimized DSP allows system developers to efficiently process raw data as target objects, separate from security-related classification and tracking performed in the CPU. Renesas Electronics' high-performance DSPs perform radar-specific algorithms such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT, Note 2), beamforming, windowing, channel calibration, and peak search in high speed and low power. DSP is highly flexible and programmable. Renesas Electronics has developed a DSP math library for automotive radar sensors to support system developers in algorithm development.

(2) Renesas Electronics' low-power technology and embedded flash memory for more compact and low-cost radar sensors

Developed using Renesas Electronics' world-leading 40nm (nm) embedded flash memory (eFlash) process technology, the RH850/V1R-M has a proven track record of rewrite cycles, the industry's fastest random access operation speed and high reliability. Since the transistor is small and the parasitic capacitance is reduced, it also has the advantage of low power consumption.

The RH850/V1R-M's process specifications also meet the industry's highest temperature requirements (connecting point temperature 150 ° C).

Embedded flash memory takes up less PCB space, has better real-time behavior, and is more integrated, giving system designers an advantage.

(3) 320MHz high performance dual core, integrated 2MB high capacity RAM, 2MB maximum speed flash and maximum temperature requirements

The new RH850/V1R-M features two G3MH CPU cores operating at 320 MHz and is the highest performing core in the RH850 family. G3MH is a superscalar Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture with two 7-level integer pipelines that can execute two different instructions simultaneously. Each G3MH core has a performance of 3.2 DMIPS/MHz (Note 3).

The RH850/V1R-M also features the 2MB industry's highest speed flash memory based on Renesas Electronics' world-leading automotive 40nm embedded flash technology.

By integrating 2MB of RAM, the RH850/V1R-M handles all specific calculations of radar cube data such as distance and velocity FFT, digital beamforming, constant false alarm rate (CFAR, Note 4) and peak detection.

Pricing and availability

Samples of the RH850/V1R-M and DSP math library will be available in the second half of 2017. Samples are priced at $30 each. Mass production is scheduled to begin in November 2018. A full suite of flexible programmable toolchains with C/C++ compilers, debuggers, simulation models and detailed performance analysis tools will also be available. (Price and availability are subject to change without notice.)
