**New Smart Road in London Uses Embedded LEDs to Improve Safety**
A new smart road equipped with embedded LED lights has been unveiled in London, aiming to enhance road safety by detecting pedestrians and alerting drivers and cyclists of potential dangers.
Developed by a company called Umbrellium for insurance provider Direct Line, the innovative road integrates high-definition cameras and LED lights directly into the surface. This technology allows the road to monitor its surroundings and react in real time.
The road features two cameras that can track hundreds of variables, identifying pedestrians and other road users within a 22-meter radius at crosswalks. The data is processed instantly—within a fraction of a second—by a computer that triggers the LEDs to display different colors and patterns as warnings.
Using machine learning, the system predicts pedestrian movement and creates safe crossing paths. The road surface is made from high-impact plastic that can be embedded in asphalt, designed to withstand heavy traffic. It contains over 660 programmable LEDs that change color and pattern to warn drivers and cyclists about pedestrians.
The prototype is waterproof, capable of supporting the weight of vehicles and people, and can distinguish between pedestrians, cars, and bicycles. This advanced technology represents a major step forward in intelligent infrastructure, offering a safer environment for all road users.
