Apple has been actively building up its VR and AR technology resources through strategic acquisitions. In 2013, the company acquired PrimeSense, a leader in depth-sensing component development. Then in 2015, Apple expanded its capabilities by purchasing Metaio, an augmented reality (AR) developer, as well as Faceshift, a motion capture technology firm. More recently, Apple added Emotient, a company specializing in emotion recognition, and Flyby Media, which focuses on bridging the physical world with digital content.
Doug Bowman, a renowned expert in Apple’s virtual reality division, is reportedly preparing to make a significant impact in the VR space. According to recent reports from the Financial Times, Apple has assembled a research team of over 100 experts dedicated to VR development. A few months ago, the company started working on multiple VR device prototypes, signaling a serious long-term commitment to the field.
While Apple previously explored VR products in the past, it abandoned the effort due to technological limitations. However, after Facebook’s $2 billion acquisition of Oculus in 2014, Apple rekindled its interest in the virtual reality market. Now, the tech giant is investing heavily in both hardware and software to create a competitive VR offering.
The VR industry has become highly competitive. Google launched a simplified version of its Cardboard VR headset in 2014, and later established a dedicated VR department. Facebook, through its purchase of Oculus, now offers the Oculus Rift, while Samsung provides the Gear VR for Galaxy users. Sony is set to release PlayStation VR for its consoles this year, and HTC, in partnership with Valve, is preparing to launch the HTC Vive with pre-orders expected soon.
Apple is also looking to strengthen its position by acquiring companies with expertise in optical technologies. The company continues to explore new opportunities in the VR and AR space, aiming to develop innovative solutions that could redefine user experiences in the coming years.
