China's All Things Connected Enters an Era of Technological Success

In the past five years, Chinese internet companies have emerged as global leaders, setting new benchmarks in both innovation and technology. The industry has evolved from a focus on commercial models to a dual-driven approach of commercial and technological advancement, propelling China from an internet giant to an internet innovator. This insight comes from the recent report titled “Five Years of Leap in Innovation: The Interpretation of China’s Internet by Top 10 Keywords,” published by the Alibaba Research Institute. Gao Hongbing, Vice President of Alibaba Group and Dean of the Ali Research Institute, shared with the Science and Technology Daily that during the rapid growth of China's digital economy, the internet has subtly reshaped consumer behavior and daily life. He noted, “China is a country on wheels, and also a country on mobile internet. People’s lives are increasingly moving toward the digital continent.” Traditional internet giants like Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent, along with emerging players such as Didi, Mobai, and shared bike companies, have significantly expanded the global influence of China’s internet sector. From street vendors to large shopping centers, innovations like small-scale scanning technologies and mobile payment systems—led by Alipay—have rapidly expanded into everyday scenarios. Chinese innovations such as shared bicycles have not only gained widespread support but also sparked significant momentum, helping to reshape the perception of China’s internet industry, which was once seen as imitative and lacking in originality. Gao Hongbing pointed out, “Five years ago, China’s cloud computing was just beginning. Our role was to adopt and use technology. Today, the top four public cloud service providers globally are all Chinese companies. We have become the original creators of cutting-edge technology.” According to Gartner, Alibaba Cloud surpassed Google in 2016 to become the fastest-growing IaaS provider worldwide. Gao explained that the rapid growth of Alibaba Cloud stems from continuous iterations in both business innovation and technological development. He highlighted the case of the Double 11 shopping festival, where the system processed 175,000 transactions per second, pushing traditional IT solutions to their limits. This challenge forced Alibaba to conduct comprehensive R&D across operating systems, middleware, databases, and security. While Gao acknowledged that China and the U.S. still have some gaps in early-stage internet development, he emphasized that China’s internet industry has long moved beyond mere business model imitation. He added, “Our investments in basic technologies and research will lead to major breakthroughs in the next 5–10 years.”
