Apple has established a VR team with hundreds of members

Apple has been actively expanding its virtual reality (VR) capabilities through strategic acquisitions. In 2013, the company acquired PrimeSense, a leader in depth-sensing technology, which later became a key component in the development of the Apple Vision Pro. In 2015, Apple added to its AR and motion capture expertise by acquiring Metaio, an augmented reality software developer, and Faceshift, a company specializing in facial motion capture. More recently, Apple expanded its emotional recognition technology portfolio by acquiring Emotient, and also took over Flyby Media, which focuses on bridging physical and digital content. These moves have given Apple a strong foundation in VR and AR technologies. According to reports, Apple has been quietly building a dedicated VR research team with hundreds of engineers working on various prototypes. The company is reportedly exploring new ways to integrate immersive experiences into its ecosystem, possibly leading to future VR or AR headsets. Doug Bowman, a well-known VR expert who previously worked at Microsoft, is now part of Apple's efforts in this space. His background in human-computer interaction and immersive design makes him a valuable asset as Apple looks to innovate in the VR field. While Apple had previously explored VR products in the past, it stepped back due to technological limitations. However, after Facebook's $2 billion acquisition of Oculus in 2014, Apple rekindled its interest in the space. Today, the company continues to search for potential M&A targets that can strengthen its optical and display technologies, which are critical for high-quality VR experiences. In the broader VR market, competition is fierce. Google launched its low-cost Cardboard VR headset in 2014 and later established a dedicated VR division. Facebook’s Oculus Rift, priced at $599, has gained traction, while Samsung offers the Gear VR for Galaxy users. Sony’s PlayStation VR is set to launch this year, and HTC Vive, developed in partnership with Valve, is preparing for pre-orders in February. With its growing tech resources and ongoing R&D efforts, Apple is well-positioned to enter the VR market with innovative solutions in the near future.
