**New Smart Road in London Uses Embedded LEDs to Improve Safety**
A new type of smart road with embedded LED lights has been unveiled in London, aiming to detect pedestrians and alert drivers and cyclists about potential dangers on the road. Developed by a company called Umbrellium for insurance provider Direct Line, this innovative road integrates high-definition cameras and LED lights directly into the surface.
The road is equipped with two cameras that can monitor hundreds of variables and detect pedestrians or other road users within a 22-meter radius at crosswalks. The system processes data in less than a hundredth of a second, allowing the LEDs to instantly display different colors and patterns to warn road users.
Designed using durable, impact-resistant plastic that can be embedded in asphalt, the road surface is capable of handling heavy traffic. It contains over 660 LED lights that can be programmed to change color and pattern, providing clear warnings to cyclists and drivers when pedestrians are crossing.
The prototype is waterproof and can support the weight of vehicles and people while distinguishing between pedestrians, cars, and bicycles. This technology represents a significant step forward in road safety, offering real-time alerts and improving communication between road users.
This intelligent infrastructure could serve as a model for future urban development, enhancing safety and efficiency in busy city environments.
