Microsoft has finally launched the Lumia 650, a budget-friendly smartphone tailored for business users. Running on Windows 10 Mobile and priced at just $199, it’s designed to offer value without compromising on essential features. However, industry analysts believe this might be the last device under the Lumia brand, which Microsoft acquired from Nokia in 2013.
The Lumia 650 is expected to feature a 5-inch display, an 8-megapixel camera, 8GB of storage, a plastic body, and a removable battery. It also includes built-in security features and seamless integration with Office 365, making it a solid choice for professionals. That said, it lacks some key Windows 10 Mobile features like "Windows Hello" for facial recognition and Continuum, which allows the phone to function as a PC. These omissions may limit its appeal in a competitive market.
Despite these efforts, the Lumia 650 is unlikely to significantly boost Microsoft’s smartphone business. The company currently holds around 3% of the global smartphone market. In the last quarter alone, Microsoft sold only 4.5 million Lumia devices, compared to Apple's 75 million iPhones. Historically, Lumia phones have sold just 110 million units worldwide.
One of the main challenges for Microsoft is the lack of developer support. Most app developers focus on iOS and Android, leaving fewer options for Windows 10 Mobile users. This makes it harder for consumers to justify choosing a Microsoft phone over other platforms.
However, there are signs that Windows 10 Mobile isn’t completely dead. Companies like Uber have partnered with Microsoft to improve app availability, and Hulu recently launched a new app compatible with Windows 10 devices across desktops, tablets, and smartphones. These developments suggest that Microsoft is still trying to stay relevant.
In addition, reports indicate that Microsoft is preparing to release a new smartphone under a different brand. The upcoming device is expected to be a major move, possibly shaking up the smartphone market and challenging Apple’s dominance. Panos Panay, Microsoft’s head of hardware, has hinted that this new phone could be a game-changer.
While the future of Microsoft’s mobile business remains uncertain, the company is clearly trying to make a comeback. With strategic partnerships and new product launches, it may yet find a way to regain some ground in the highly competitive smartphone industry.
