Diodes all-in-one fan driver simplifies circuit design

Diodes Incorporated has introduced two new single-phase fan motor drivers, the AH5772 and AH5773, designed for use in consumer electronics, industrial appliances, and office equipment. These highly integrated solutions are ideal for low-voltage brushless DC fan control, offering compact packaging options and efficient thermal management to reduce component count and shrink PCB size. The devices feature a sensitive Hall sensor and input amplifiers that can work with weak magnetic field magnets, helping to lower costs. The Hall sensor ensures stable performance across a wide operating range, with minimal tolerances that simplify manufacturing and testing processes. This makes it easier to maintain consistent motor performance over time. Both drivers include low on-resistance H-bridge output stages capable of handling up to 500mA continuous current and 1A peak current, making them suitable for larger and more complex fan applications. They come in various small package options, including the MSOP8-EP and U-DFN2020-6 for the AH5773, and the TO-94 package for the AH5772. Operating from a wide voltage range of 2.4V to 18V, these drivers allow fans to start at voltages 20% lower than their 12V rating, making them versatile for a variety of BLDC cooling fan applications. Their operational temperature range spans from -40°C to 105°C, meeting strict environmental requirements. Speed control is achieved through voltage input or PWM signals on the AH5773, which allows for precise speed regulation. When the PWM pin is held low for over 65ms, the device enters a low-power standby mode, consuming only 100μA. It can quickly restart when the PWM signal returns, making it useful for rotor stall protection scenarios. To protect against overheating and damage, both drivers include rotor stall detection. If a stall is detected, the output is automatically shut down and restarted once the rotor is free. This process is handled internally without requiring an external capacitor. Additionally, the AH5772 and AH5773 offer overvoltage and overtemperature protection features. In case of overvoltage, the device turns off and enters standby mode to prevent damage. The overtemperature shutdown function helps maintain safe operating temperatures, ensuring long-term reliability.
