On January 19, 2016, China Telecom and Qualcomm held the China Telecom Terminal Industry Partner Conference. China Telecom's 4G+ network, which offers peak downlink speeds of over 300 Mbps, is a significant development for users and operators alike. Derek Aboli, President of Qualcomm, noted that 4G+ brings greater capacity and performance benefits. In 2015, Strategy Analytics predicted that carrier aggregation (the core technology behind 4G+) would become standard in the coming years, with China expected to be the largest producer of such terminals in 2016.
In July 2015, China Telecom and Qualcomm co-hosted the "2015 Tianyi Terminal Trading Expo and Summit Forum," where the "Tianyi 4G+" brand was officially launched. The Nubia Z9 Speed Edition became the first device to support China Telecom's 4G+ business. Throughout 2015, various 4G+ terminals powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors were released, including models like the LeTV Super Mobile Music 1 Pro, Xiaomi Note Top Edition, HTC One A9, and others.
Qualcomm continues to support advanced connectivity technologies across all levels of its Opteron processors. At the high end, the Snapdragon 820 features the X12 LTE modem, supporting download speeds up to 600 Mbps and upload speeds of 150 Mbps. It also integrates Wi-Fi technologies like MU-MIMO and tri-band 802.11ad, enhancing overall connectivity and performance.
Beyond 4G+, Qualcomm is also expanding its support for 4G+ across different processor tiers, from high-end to low-end, ensuring broader accessibility. The company also emphasized the importance of "Qianlong Quantong," a concept that meets and exceeds operator requirements by supporting all seven network modes, including LTE-FDD, TD-LTE, WCDMA, and more.
At the conference, China Telecom announced plans to further develop the Internet of Things (IoT) under the "Internet +" policy, positioning it as a new strategic business. The company will focus on key markets such as logistics and transportation, forming industrial alliances and strengthening collaboration in chips, modules, and applications.
Qualcomm also discussed the future of IoT and 5G, highlighting how these technologies will transform industries like autonomous vehicles, smart cities, wearables, and healthcare. With lower latency and higher reliability, 5G will enable new applications, from ultra HD video conferencing to real-time telemedicine.
During the summit, Qualcomm showcased its advancements in drone technology, including the YING drone developed with Tencent, which uses the Snapdragon Flight platform for enhanced performance and connectivity. This demonstrates how Qualcomm's technology is shaping the future of consumer electronics and beyond.
