"Robinson: Journey" Depth Assessment: VR Adventures of Dinosaur Planet

It is believed that every single-party party is no stranger to the name “Crysis”, and this work has reached the level of uniqueness both in the picture and in the degree of burning; now, Crytek, the developer of graphics crisis, puts the picture first. Buddhism brought the VR community. The following is an article from UploadVR commentator JAMIE FELTHAM. From his point of view, he talks about the game experience of Crytek VR's new book Robinson: Journey.

Robinson: The Journey

Before the article began, the author first predicted that the dinosaurs will soon return to our lives. After the mass extinction tens of millions of years ago, they will come back to our VR headlines in virtual form in groups. You will experience more than any book, movie or TV show since the last century. A more realistic and closer dinosaur game experience. Not surprisingly, VR Jurassic Park will come to us like a tidal wave.

Crytek Studio is fortunate to be the first wave of this torrent of dinosaurs. The new VR work by this German game developer – Robinson: The Journey (Robinson: The Journey), following Rift’s exclusive “The Climb” (Climb) will be held this week. PlayStation VR will be online, this will be PSVR's first game about dinosaurs. The amazing elements of dinosaurs will gradually diminish with each return, but for now, it is the absolute protagonist in this luxurious adventure, where the fun of the game is coming from. Thrilling setbacks.

Despite these ancient prehistoric creatures, "Robinson: Drifting" is actually a science fiction work. In the game, Robin, who was played by the player, survived the tragic forced landing on Tyson III planet: The planet covered by new species of dinosaurs was one of the goals of the human interplanetary colonization program, but there were some mistakes in the course of the action. Let the whole batch of colonial troops disappear, leaving only Robin's life. The game did not allow the player to start the plot from Robin's surviving moment, but set the story after a year of forced landing - Robin had already camped on the planet and was accompanied by a floating robot HIGS. And a pet dinosaur named Laika.

After Lyka finds another damaged HIGS robot in the ruins, the player will search for the remaining information and do whatever he can to find possible survivors after the disaster.

Robinson: Journey has opened up a vast new world to VR players. However, only five small-to-medium areas can be explored. On this remote planet, players will climb rock walls and debris covered with orange rocks, vines, pick up roadside objects to clear roads or create new roads, and even play the role of a HIGS robot to solve some of the energy distribution problems.

Wildlife in the game

The most appealing point in the game belongs to the grand and refined details of these scenes. I experienced this work on the PS4 console, and this beautiful dinosaur planet often surprises the author—especially the VR version. The jungle is a thick labyrinth of branches and leaves, where dense vegetation grows. You can't help but drop the handles and sit on the floor to admire the beauty. The detail material represents the pinnacle of the PSVR, and every tremor in the game is consistent with the highest precision that motion tracking technology can achieve. If the original intention of "Robinson: Drifting" was to demonstrate Cryengine's Cryengine engine, its purpose has already been achieved.

The best part of the game is that players can get a close look at the exotic wildlife that surrounds Maolin (if they are not scared to run away). Players can use Robin's right hand device to scan these creatures, collect green dots, and avoid red dots - this is a small game designed by Robinson: Journey for interactivity, but over time the process can easily become boring. . However, in the process of collecting the scans, the players are like going back to childhood fantasy science fiction trips.

"Robinson: Journey" is not a simple adventure game: Puzzle and action elements are also a major part of the game. The latter comes from the game's lengthy climbing section (looks like elements taken directly from Climbing). In the process of climbing the wall, Robin's virtual hands will grasp a graspable object. At this time, the player uses L2 and R2 as left and right hands, respectively, to proceed toward the next grip, and to climb upwards step by step.

In the best case, the fluid system adopted by Robinson: Journey is like the first person's “Uncharted”. Later in the game, this kind of climbing will become very common: In free fall, you must let go of your current grip and quickly grab the other during the descent. If it fails, the player will start again. In the worst case, this kind of control will make the player crazy: Robin's virtual hands are like resisting grabbing these grips. The feeling that this kind of thing cannot be grasped is as frustrating as the threat of dinosaurs.

These action mechanisms may be improved through the PlayStation Move handle (or Oculus Touch/Vive handles). Most players can play smoothly with the DualShock 4 controller - such as the author himself, but Robin's pair of virtual hands does in some cases make people feel a need for a more reasonable and intuitive operation program.

It is worth mentioning that these dinosaurs are not harmless creatures - tearing players is not a big problem for them. In the later stages of the game, sneaking in the ruins and avoiding the fast dragon attack can be said to be a very exciting adrenaline. It is even difficult for the writer to face the tragic fate of being caught by the birds and being divided on the spot; the reality of VR always gives the writer a feeling that he has been eaten by the corpse – which is enough to make people close their eyes and turn away. A similar experience can scare the author: Once I was scared off the seat, I laughed for five minutes.

HIGS and Lycra

The puzzle part of Robinson: Journey sometimes seems unclear. It is easy for players to trap for twenty or thirty minutes without knowing what to do next. Even if they are fortunate enough to solve this step, they must be trapped in a loop in the next step. Players often need to scare off the creatures in front of them through Lycra (this is easy to master), but after a walk, they will always have no way to go. At the beginning of the game, the search for objects such as blades from wind turbines was straightforward, but the long search process set the tone for the game experience.

This may be another point VR taught us: In the vast world, the author often loses his direction and ignores details. This is not uncommon, and once I even took turns in a scene many times to discover the small details that were ignored by the author. The game's hint system in this respect may have to be improved, but the current system can be said to extend the original short game experience in a sense.

The author spends four and a half hours of playing time on Robinson: Journey. In the end, the author found that many of these parts can be greatly shortened. The work itself is still actually much richer than most VR games, although I personally think that it is not the full potential of the game mechanism, but also gives people a sense that the story is not complete. The truncated scenario implies the possibility of a sequel, and Robin’s lack of mention in the first year of Tyson III’s landing is regrettable: the relationship between Robin, HIGS, and Lycra is definitely worth writing. Interesting story.

HIGS instantly reminds us of the Wheatley robot in Portal 2 (Charts 2). Its discerning, fussy character and the attitude of opposing Robyn's adopting young dinosaurs form the core of the story. . The theme of co-existence in the game is vividly reflected in the game, which is why the author is willing to continue exploring in the game.
