MIT Develops New Wireless Communication System MoVR for VR

Wireless capabilities make VR a more viable technology because cables on Oculus and HTC Vive are a heavy burden. To this end, MIT developed a new wireless communication system designed specifically for VR that provides us with a truly immersive VR experience.

MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory proposed "MoVR" as a way for VR headsets to communicate with PCs without sacrificing other important features such as graphics fidelity and frame rate. These are the keys to ensuring a smooth virtual reality experience and are not easily disgusting to users.

MoVR uses millimeter-wave technology (also used in next-generation 5G mobile network experiments) to help achieve head-to-head communications with computers at rates of up to Gigabits per second. Millimeter wave technology is much faster than the current technology, such as WiFi and other existing RF technologies.

Although millimeter wave technology can transmit large amounts of uncompressed data at high speed, it is easily blocked by obstacles. For this reason, the CSAIL team behind the MoVR used programmable mirrors to solve this problem. Programmable mirrors help detect the direction of the signal and reconfigure its receiver. This ensures that the signal is not interrupted by things such as hand movements or other obstacles.

The current test system uses two antennas, each about half the size of a credit card. The iterations of the future full version can be as small as a smartphone and can be used multiple times in the same room.

Xiaobian also reported last week that HTC has launched a wireless solution that aims to achieve strong PC-level wireless VR, but the MIT CSAIL project may have more potential for higher quality graphics requirements. As mentioned above, this project can support different types of heads-up display.
