IDC: Global Tablet PC shipments increase by 304% in the second quarter

According to the latest data report released by IDC on Wednesday, September 15, Beijing time (Ace), the annual growth rate of tablet PC shipments in the second quarter of this year reached 303.8%, and the quarterly growth rate reached 88.9%. In the second quarter of 2011, total shipments of global tablet PCs were 13.6 million units, which led IDC to increase its original expected total tablet shipments in 2011 from 53.5 million units to 62.5 million units.

In the second quarter of this year, Apple iPad shipments reached 9.3 million units, continuing to top the market share of 68.3% of global tablet PCs. The market share of Android tablet in the second quarter declined from 34% to 26.8%. IDC said that this trend will continue until the third quarter of this year, and it is expected that the market share of Android tablet will drop to 23% in the third quarter. The fourth quarter will rebound to 25.9%.

Professional analysts believe that with other tablet PCs entering the market, Apple’s dominance will show a decline at the end of this year. “This year, Apple’s iOS share will continue to lead by as much as 40% over Google’s Android system. However, we expect that Apple’s market share will increase as manufacturers will push more new tablets into the market. It will drop to about 50% by the end of this year."
