In an exclusive interview, Lenovo vice president and general manager of Lenovo Venture Capital Song Chunyu believes that AR/VR will become the next generation computing platform. Although the current AR/VR technology is not yet mature, the ecosystem is far from being established, but for industrial investors, the future technology should be laid out sooner rather than later.

On the device side, Lenovo invested in the American augmented reality company Meta this year. In the content field, in 2014, it invested in the VR game maker Bell Air game; a month ago, it invested in Zhang Yimou's VR film brand Soreal. In the environment where the game is in the doldrums and the high quality content of the film and television is extremely lacking, Lenovo Venture Capital's investment has also been widely concerned in the industry.

Song Chunyu told reporters that investing in Zhang Yimou's team has two ideas: one is to create high-quality VR film and television content, and the other is that Soreal has also become an offline experience channel. He said that after seeing a lot of VR film and television production teams, Soreal is the best choice from the above two aspects.

Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO of Lenovo Group, once said that AR/VR and the future MR (Mixed Reality) are the next generation technologies that will change the world after PC Internet and mobile Internet, and are also the areas where Lenovo will focus on the future. The position of Lenovo Venture Capital is Lenovo's global technology industry fund. The investment projects are mostly centered on Lenovo's industrial chain, and the investment means for the Internet and intelligent ecology.

In the AR field, in September this year, Lenovo joined the Google AR/VR platform Daydream and launched the first AR phone that supports Tango technology. In the VR field, research and development of VRHPC and 8K HD head display. Around Lenovo's industry chain, Lenovo Ventures' layout in the AR/VR field is: end-to-end layout, from core components to core content and channels, to build a complete industry chain. Specifically, in the hardware field, Lenovo Ventures' investment strategy is to “remove all the core components of the head display and select the most important part to invest.” Song Chunyu said.

However, compared to hardware, content and channels are clearly not an area that Lenovo is good at. In addition to investing in content production teams, Lenovo Ventures is also looking at and distributing channel-related projects.

The agency believes that AR/VR will usher in a burst around 2018, but they will not be widely deployed in a "track" way. In their view, the invested company needs to complement the existing business of Lenovo or develop into the main business of Lenovo in the future.

In June of this year, Lenovo participated in the investment of another American AR company. Meta was previously seen as a competitor to MagicLeap, but Meta's imaging technology is different from MagicLeap (ML is a holographic projection, and Meta2 is placed on a medium). Meta also received an investment from Tencent. But as MagicLeap was recently exposed again, its promotional videos were produced by special effects companies, and the core fiber scanning technology was turned into a long-term research project, and the commercialization of AR technology was questioned. Silicon Valley people close to MagicLeap also told reporters that the enthusiasm of some investors in Silicon Valley for deep technology is indeed being discounted.

However, Chinese capital is still very interested in deep technology. This year's newly established Lenovo Venture Capital Group is defined as a full-platform investment, while the previous music fund is more focused on early projects. "We want to invest in companies with a valuation above $10 billion and a leading company in the industry." Song Chunyu said that Lenovo Ventures is also actively looking for companies that can surpass BAT.
