Analog Devices, Inc. recently introduced two LED flash drivers, the ADP1660 and the ADP1649. The ADP1660 is a dual 750 mA (1500 mA total) LED flash driver in a 2.0 mm x 1.6 mm 12-lead WLCSP package. The ADP1649 is a single channel 1000 mA LED driver in a 2.0 mm x 1.5 mm 12-lead WLCSP package. Both devices deliver best-in-class efficiency to extend battery life in smartphones and tablets and limit battery loading during flash and flashlight events.

The ADP1649 and ADP1660 LED flash drivers integrate a programmable 1.5 MHz or 3 MHz synchronous inductive boost converter that can reduce board size with a low cost of 1 mm, a 1 uH power inductor, and a 0603 size input and output capacitor. Both devices have an I2C communication port built in for added flexibility and security control. The interface also supports timer, current, and status bit readback programming features.
In addition, Tx masking is built in to minimize the risk of battery overload during simultaneous power amplifier (PA) transmission bursts and flash events. The masking feature can be used to quickly reduce the LED flash current during a PA burst to maintain the battery load within an acceptable range.
